Belgium: Advocacy Advisor, Children’s Rights & Climate

The Opportunity: 

Save the Children International has an exciting opportunity for you to join our team as the Advocacy Advisor, Children’s rights & Climate in our SC Europe office based in Brussels, Belgium.

Role Purpose:

The EU has given climate exceptional priority through the EU Green Deal and other related actions and policies and is rightfully being considered as a leader on the issue of climate protection globally.

One of SC’s key priorities globally is to make sure that the climate crisis is perceived as a child rights crisis and children are agents of change. SC’s global co-child led campaign, Generation Hope, is focused on climate change and inequalities of children with the purpose of creating a safe, healthy and happy future for children.

In this context, SC Europe aims to strengthen its advocacy capacity and engagement with the EU with the purpose of leading discussions related to climate change, environmental protection and children's rights.

The post holder will strengthen internal ways of working by connecting members and offices in Europe and linking it to the work taking place globally in the movement. They will lead SC Europe’s advocacy by designing an influence EU focused strategy and position the office and organisation among EU decision makers and Brussels based organisations. They will tailor the organisation’s messaging on EU policies and strengthen and coordinate the members’ messaging at national level. Finally, the post holder will work together with child participation colleagues in the movement to empower children to know their rights in relation to climate change and bring children’s views in decision making procedures at EU level.

The post holder is expected to start Q1 2024.

EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS:

  • Demonstrable advocacy experience in child rights, protection, and climate change
  • Knowledge and understanding of EU policies on climate change / environment protection
  • Networks of influence, and an ability to manage diverse professional relationships, thereby securing significant new opportunities for the organisation.
  • A proven advocacy track record; the ability to speak and communicate effectively, and to tailor messages to different audiences.
  • Knowledge and experience of child participation and/or child led advocacy is desirable.
  • Experience of successfully operating in an international environment with people from diverse backgrounds and cultures.
  • A full appreciation of the value of cooperation within a team environment.
  • Experience of solving complex issues through analysis, definition of a clear way forward and ensuring buy in.
  • Commitment to Save the Children’s values.
  • Ability to work and write in English; French speaking and writing desirable.

We can offer circa EUR 60,267 on a 12-month basis. National T&C will apply.

This role will be based in Belgium or elsewhere in Europe with regular travel to Belgium, provided the successful candidate has proof of eligibility to work in this location.
